Instructor Bios

Melissa Tipton

Melissa has been working for REI for over five years and counting. She spent her childhood outside every minute that she could and got into camping and hiking with her dad at a very early age. She’s looking forward to running a youth camp for the month of July in Tahoe National Forest and to thru-hiking the John Muir Trail in August this year.

Nathan Schmidt

Nathan has been working with REI over 4 years and loves the outdoors.  He grew up in northern California where at an early age he enjoyed camping, hiking, and kayaking with his family.  Mostly these days you will still find him enjoying these passions as well as traveling to Yosemite and Joshua Tree national parks for rock climbing and backpacking.
